Pasture Raised Pork

At Eggsotics we choose to raise pasture grazing pigs. What does that mean? It means our pigs do not “root up” our pastures but actually graze on a variety of grasses and shrubs. In addition to native grasses we also plant a variety of forage crops during dry seasons so that our pigs always have access to fresh greens. Rotation grazing helps keep our pastures productive. Their diet is completed with a grain based ration to ensure that they are getting of all their required nutrients.

Our current breeds include the KuneKune and Idaho Pasture Pigs (IPPs). The KuneKune is a small, New Zealand breed which nearly went extinct in 1970s and later was imported to the US in 1996. The Idaho Pasture Pig is a medium sized pig, and was developed from the Kunekune breed, in Idaho in 2006 by the Farris family. IPPs make an exceptional homestead or small farm pigs with the same demeanor and qualities that our beloved KuneKunes have.

Better Fat Profile: Pasture-raised pork has higher levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and a more favorable balance compared to omega-6 fatty acids found in conventionally raised pork.

Increased Vitamins and Minerals: Due to their diverse diet of plants, bugs, and sunlight, pasture-raised pigs yield pork with higher levels of vitamin D, vitamin E, and antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage. Natural foraging diet contributes to a more nutrient-dense meat that contains important minerals like selenium, iron, and zinc.

Improved Animal Welfare: Allowing pigs to roam, forage, and engage in natural behaviors like rooting leads to better physical health and overall well-being for the animals.

Reduced Environmental Impact: Rotational grazing practices used for pasture-raised animals can help improve soil health, reduce water runoff, and enhance land quality. Resulting in sustainable farming.
